The attorney general’s office has come out with a report on the auto insurance companies. The report finds that the healthy competition in auto insurance that was introduced in the year 2007 has not yet produced the desired results. Instead of competing with each other in providing lower auto insurance rates for the customers the auto insurance companies have jacked up the rates every year. The customers have to pay a higher insurance rate if their socio economic status is not to the liking of the insurance companies. Ideally, the customers should be judged on their driving abilities. But the auto insurance companies rate the customers on a different scale which is a practice to be condemned. A customer gets a lower auto insurance rate if he is a senior citizen or if he is a person from the high income group. A person who owns a home is also charged a lower rate of auto insurance. But younger persons and people from lower income groups are charged an exorbitant rate irrespective of the fact that their driving records are impeccable. People from the rural areas and people who do not own homes are also charged a higher insurance rate.
